Fellowship is music to his ears!
Professor of Music, Richard Middleton, of the International Centre for Music Studies, School of Arts and Cultures, has been elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
The British Academy is an independent learned society promoting the humanities and social sciences. Each year, the Academy elects 35 new Fellows in recognition of their distinction as scholars in those disciplines.
Responding to the news of his Fellowship, Professor Middleton said: 'On a personal level, this is of course very satisfying. But I'm also delighted at this recognition for Newcastle University; because of our excellence in science and medicine, the quality of much of the work that goes on here in Humanities, Arts and Social Science often goes unremarked upon.
'Needless to say, I'm especially pleased that this recognition comes to the International Centre for Music Studies, where the collegiality and intellectual calibre of my colleagues makes the pursuit of research a particular pleasure', he added.
Professor Middleton said he was also pleased that his election as a Fellow signalled the British Academy's interest in popular music studies – his principal area of work, and one in which Newcastle is a leader.
'At a time when research is increasingly driven by the interests of powerful sponsors, government and commercial, the existence of a relatively autonomous institution like the Academy, dedicated to the support of intellectual inquiry pure and not so simple, seems to me something to support; and I hope to contribute to its continuing success' added Professor Middleton.
