Prizes, awards and accolades have been received by Dr Tony Young, Miss Lindsay Allason-Jones, the University's sustainabliity team, its Faculty Research Funding Development Managers and Emeritus Professor Stewart Evans.

International prize for Dr Tony Young

Dr Tony Young (pictured), lecturer in language and communication, has won the International Association of Language and Social Psychology James J Bradac Prize for his contribution to the field.

Since 2007, Tony has been leading a project with the aim of determining best practice in terms of communicating with people living with dementia.  To ensure the outcome, the professional and lay team members contacted dementia sufferers, their carers and families, psychiatrists, and care home managers and workers.  Each was given a framework and asked to add advice and tips.  The resulting paper was commended as making 'the most significant recent advance in the field of language and social psychology by a researcher within five years of receipt of a PhD".

"I'm really chuffed," said Tony.  "It was a big surprise but I'm glad that the work is gaining recognition.  It was very much a team effort involving the University and a number of partners."

Other outcomes of the project are a book, Communication and Dementia:  New Perspectives, New Approaches, soon to be published, and a free-to-access website which will pull together ways of optimising communication with those living with dementia and their families.

Poster pulls national prize

Gwen Averley, Johanna Gascoigne-Owens and Sue Mitchell, the University's Faculty Research Funding Development Managers (RFDMs), designed a poster illustrating the course of innovative workshops which they devised and delivered across the faculties.

Entitled Playing the Game - Getting those Grants, the poster, (pictured below), won first prize at the 2010 conference of the Professional Association of Research Managers and Administrators UK (ARMA).

During this time of economic recession and dwindling success rates, a clear understanding of how the grant application process works is vital, say the RFDMs. They therefore devised their own series of workshops - lively, interactive sessions where academics work with past applications, coming to an understanding of what funders want and why, and how proposals are assessed - in order to help applicants find a 'winning formula'.

The workshops proved to be informative and motivating, as witnessed by the evaluation comments.
