Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums (TWAM) is one of only 16 applicants nationwide to have bid successfully for Renaissance major grant funding from Arts Council England for the three year period to 2015.
In the next few weeks, TWAM will learn what proportion of funding it will receive from the £60 million pot available through the Renaissance programme to support the activities of the 12 museums and heritage sites in its portfolio.
Bids were judged against five goals set by the Arts Council, namely that: excellence is thriving and celebrated in museums; more people experience and are inspired by museums; museums are sustainable, resilient and innovative; the leadership and workforce in museums is diverse and highly skilled; and every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of museums.
Professor Eric Cross, Dean of Cultural Affairs, said: “Under TWAM’s forward-looking management, the Great North Museum has rightly become one of the best known and most frequently visited regional museums in the country.
“We are fortunate to have such a dynamic organisation as TWAM - whose commitment to excellence and raising aspirations so closely match our own - running the Great North Museum for the partnership.”
