Medical student in national surgical skills competition final

Masha Saleki, a fifth year medical student from Newcastle University, has won the Northern heat of a nationwide surgical skills competition run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).

She will now go to the Grand Final in Edinburgh where she will compete to win a trip to Johnson & Johnson’s skills centre in Hamburg, Germany.

The Lister Surgical Skills Competition has been organised by RCSEd in association with Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies to commemorate the life and contribution of Lord Joseph Lister, 100 years after his death.

Mahsa said: “The regional heat was a challenging, yet fun, experience being able to revise and practice basic surgical skills alongside my peers. I think this provides some objective evidence of my interest in surgery which may indeed benefit my career prospects.

“The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh provides a great communication portal between students and the College, with great updates on events and outreach programmes. Winning the regional heat was a pleasant surprise and I am now very excited to be able to compete in the Grand Final. Being able to visit the European Surgical Institute in Hamburg would be a great and unforgettable experience.”
