He was presented with his award by Evening Chronicle editor Darren Thwaites at a ceremony held at the Thistle County Hotel, in Newcastle.
The person who nominated him – who remains anonymous - said: “He is an outstanding doctor who was headhunted all the way from Germany by his predecessor Sir Alan Craft because of his achievements in the research and treatments of children’s cancers.
“Josef’s role means he is an incredibly busy man, he works with the Northern Institute for Cancer Research, the largest research facility of its kind in Europe, as well as treating patients and yet he makes time to work closely with charities that fundraise for the research.”
Professor Vormoor said: “I feel honoured but do not think I really deserve it.
“It is really a recognition of the numerous people who endlessly fundraise for childhood cancer in the region, particularly the North of England Children's Cancer Research Fund (NECCR), and the members of both our clinical and research teams at Newcastle University and in the Great North Children's Hospital that work hard to improve the outcome for children and young people with cancer.”
