Throughout the day points were hotly contested in the many sports and fixtures although by the time the main rugby union first teams took to the field for their match in front of 3,000 supporters, their team-mates had already done enough to win overall. However, this did not prevent their decisive victory over arch-rivals Northumbria University.
Professor Charles Harvey, pro-vice-chancellor with responsibility for sport, congratulated the students saying, "What a fantastic achievement for our sportsmen and women.
"Our victory in the Calvert Cup serves to reinforce Newcastle University's fast-growing reputation for sporting excellence."
