Professor Chris Brink, vice-chancellor of Newcastle University, has been appointed as the Higher Education mentoring champion by Iain Wright, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.

Professor Brink will now lead the drive to find more mentors among staff, students and graduates from the Higher Education sector to inspire young people to 'aim high'.

Iain Wright, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for 14-19 Reform and Apprenticeships, said, "I am delighted to appoint Professor Brink as our new Higher Education mentoring champion.  He brings with him a breadth of experience and shares our commitment to raising the aspirations and improving the opportunities for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"I am sure that Professor Brink will be able to use his extensive knowledge of the Higher Education sector to encourage more institutions to provide mentors for young people from the teaching staff, student population and alumni."

Professor Brink noted, "Young people are influenced by messages from other young people.  If we give our students a positive experience, they can become ambassadors for making higher education an attractive prospect for other young people. I am pleased to be invited to make a contribution in this regard."
