Newcastle University is launching a new scholarship scheme in Singapore in collaboration with the Government, to help develop the next generation of engineers and designers.

The Industrial Post-graduate Programme (IPP) is a collaboration between Newcastle University International Singapore (NUIS) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

Designed to build up a pool of postgraduate manpower with the critical R&D skills necessary for roles in industry, the programme will provide postgraduate training in a corporate R&D environment.

EDB will provide up to 200 students over the next five years with full scholarships, meaning EDB will fund the students’ tuition fees and R&D related expenses as well as their salary for up to four years.

Newcastle University is the one of the first non-Singaporean universities being recognised by the EDB  to be of equal footing as the Singapore autonomous universities to launch the IPP.

Professor Ehsan Mesbahi, Dean (Singapore) and Chief Executive of NUIS, said: “By launching these PhD scholarships in 2012, Newcastle University is strengthening its academic presence in Singapore by actively seeking collaborations and partnerships with academic institutions, industries, government agencies and major stakeholders to engage in research, enterprise and consultancy, representing a globally effective Civic University.”

In addition, the 4th cohort of Newcastle University students graduated from NUIS today.  Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ella Ritchie presided over the ceremony, which saw 82 students gain their degrees in subjects including marine engineering, naval architecture and offshore engineering, as well as several Masters graduates.
