Tackling future transport challenges

A new network bringing together some of the leading experts in marine, rail and road transport is being launched today at Newcastle University.

Set up to tackle the many transport challenges facing today’s society, the network will pull together expertise from across the university as well as business and industry to make the North East a world leader in transport technology research.

Under the banner transportNewcastle, the network is already spearheading advances in low carbon vehicle technology and helping to drive changes in traffic management through its intelligent transport systems.

Professor Tony Roskilly explained: “The aim of the network is to build on our strengths here at Newcastle University to directly address transport-related problems faced by today’s society.

“Every single one of us relies on one or more forms of transport to go about our daily lives but current systems are unsustainable.

“By pulling together expertise from across a broad spectrum, our aim is to develop intelligent, interconnected, greener and safer transport systems that will take us into a sustainable future.”

The network will be officially launched by Brian Simpson MEP, the first British MEP to be elected Chair of the Transport Committee in the European Parliament.
