Research Degrees

We welcome applications from enthusiastic and highly motivated graduates interested in an MPhil or PhD by research. Whilst we often have vacancies for PhDs funded by UK research councils and charities, we also welcome self-funding applicants from the UK and overseas interested in studying for a PhD in our division.

Our specialized research interests in psychology are diverse, and include evolutionary psychology, perception and cognition, animal behaviour, neuroscience, and social psychology. This is reflected in some of the research projects currently being undertaken by postgraduate students:

  • Context-dependent choice and its implications for welfare research.
  • Avian cognition and the evolution of warning signals in insects.
  • Colour perception of natural objects.
  • New approaches in the study of female physical attractiveness.
  • The psychology of modern spirituality.

For course content, research areas, research skills training, entry requirements, fees, funding and visa information please see our degree description:

Students who are considering a postgraduate research degree may find it helpful to find out more about the Schools' major research areas and the particular interests of members of staff. This will help you in selecting a potential supervisor. Supervisors are based in the School and/or the Institute of Neuroscience.

We also provide training in teaching and laboratory demonstration in order that our students gain valuable educational experience, and can supplement their income through teaching support work.

As part of your study here you may wish to attend or present your work at conferences run by professional societies in the field of psychology. Students in the division are strongly encouraged to go to conferences to enable them to understand the context of their own research, learn more about their research topic, and to meet potential collaborators or future employers. There may also be funding available for conference attendence.
