Modern Language Modules Offered by the School of Modern Languages as Outside Subjects

Notes

(i) The following combinations of modules are available to students registered in schools other than the School of Modern Languages who are required or wish to take a modern foreign language as part of their degree programme. The regulations specific to the degree programme for which a student is registered apply, but these supplementary regulations specify the combinations of modern language modules that may be studied.

(ii) A full listing of language modules will be found in the List of Modules.

(iii) Unless otherwise stated modules have a credit value of 20.

1. Levels of Study of Modern Language Modules

(a) Modern language modules available as outside subjects to students registered in schools other than the School of Modern Languages are offered at four levels. Approved candidates who hold a GCE A level pass in the chosen language, or an equivalent qualification shall normally enter Level B;

(b) Approved candidates with a lower qualification or with no previous knowledge of the language concerned shall normally enter Level A;

(c) Candidates will normally study a language at Level A or Level B at Stage 1;

(d) Candidates taking a language for more than one year shall progress through the levels consecutively.

2. Chinese as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: CHN103 (20), CHN104 (20)

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take CHN103 only.

(b) Level B

All candidates shall take the following module: CHN201 (40)

(c) Level C

All candidates shall take the following module: CHN401 (40)

3. French as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: FRE165, FRE166

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take either FRE165 or FRE166, depending on their previous knowledge of the language.

(b) Level B

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: FRE171;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: FRE117, SML118, SML119, SML120.

(c) Level C

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: FRE261;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: FRE239, FRE240, FRE241, FRE242, FRE243.

(d) Level D

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: FRE461;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: FRE402, FRE403, FRE404, FRE405, FRE407, FRE408.

4. German as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: GER162, GER163

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take either GER162 or GER163, depending on their previous knowledge of the language.

(b) Level B

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: GER171;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: GER116, SML118, SML119, SML120.

(c) Level C

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: GER261;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: GER231, GER234, GER235, GER236, GER237, GER263.

(d) Level D

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: GER461;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: GER235, GER263, GER402, GER403, GER404, GER405.

5. Japanese as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: JPN103 (20), JPN104 (20)

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take JPN103 only.

(b) Level B

All candidates shall take the following module: JPN201 (40)

(c) Level C

All candidates shall take the following module: JPN401 (40)

6. Portuguese as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: POR165, POR166

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take either POR165 or POR166, depending on their previous knowledge of the language.

(b) Level B

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: POR261;

(ii) Candidates may also select LAS226.

(c) Level C

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: POR461;

(ii) Candidates may also select  LAS401.

7. Spanish and Latin American Studies as an Outside Subject

(a) Level A

All candidates shall take the following modules: SPA165, SPA166.

Note: candidates who are required to take only 20 credits in a modern foreign language shall take either SPA165 or SPA166, depending on their previous knowledge of the language.

(b) Level B

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: SPA171;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: LAS110, SML118, SML119, SML120, SPA117.

(c) Level C

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: SPA261;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: LAS226, SPA219, SPA221, SPA224, SPA225.

(d) Level D

(i) All candidates shall take the following module: SPA461;

(ii) Candidates may select a further module from the following: LAS401, LAS402, SPA401, SPA402.
