(b) All candidates shall select, subject to the approval of the Degree Programme Director and the Head of School concerned, modules in a single foreign language to a credit value of 40.
2. Stages 2 and 3
(a) All Stage 2 and Stage 3 modules contribute towards the degree classificiation and the credit value of the module indicates its weight in the final assessment.
(b) All candidates shall take modules to a credit value of 60 in each semester.
(c) By the end of Stage 3 all candidates should have taken the following combination of modules from the BANDS offered by the School of English Literature, Language and linguistics:
(i) 40 credits from BAND 1 in Stage 2;
(ii) 40 credits from BAND 2;
(iii) 20-credit Extended Study from BAND 11 in Stage 3;
(iv) 140 credits from BANDS 1 to 4.
Note: candidates may select modules with a total credit value of no more than 60 from an approved list of modules taught outside the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, in place of modules to the same total credit value under 2c(iv) above. The list is available from the School of Modern Languages.
3. Stage 3
Stage 3 candidates may replace one of the modules under 2c(iv) with further credits from BAND 11, which may be combined with the 20 credits under 2c(iii) to form a Dissertation (40 credits). Those wishing to write a Dissertation should see the appropriate Degree programme Director at the end of the semester preceding that in which they propose to offer it.
4. Assessment Methods
The following methods will be used: unseen written examination papers; in-course assessment essays and other projects; extended essays and dissertations.
Details of the method of assessment for each module or course of modules are published in the relevant schools.
5. Determination of Degree Classification
Candidates will be assessed for degree classification on the basis of the assessment of all modules taken at Stage 2 and all those taken at Stage 3. Assessment from Stage 2 will carry the same weight as that from Stage 3.
