About Research at Newcastle
Strategy
Newcastle University aims to be a globally significant research organisation that performs high quality research across a wide range of disciplines and locations. The University conducts its research activities in a manner that combines a resolute commitment to excellence coupled to concern for the needs of both local society and global issues.
The University maintains a commitment to conventional discipline based research which represents the core research activities of academics and largely takes place in research groups based in individual academic units. Such activities contribute to the supply of fundamental knowledge and are supported through academic schools or institutes representing either conventional or emerging discipline based subjects. The University has a strong ethos of supporting multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research based on excellence within individual disciplines.
As part of the University’s commitment to excellence with impact, we group and nurture a significant part of our research under institutional challenge themes that address key societal issues. These themes address the demand-side of research by responding to pressing needs within society. Each theme is led by a designated thematic research Institute on behalf of the whole University community.
Ageing has been designated as the University’s first challenge theme and this is being led by the Institute for Ageing and Health based in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The second challenge theme will be Sustainability which will be led by the Science, Agriculture and Engineering Faculty.
