Research Strategy

Research Strategy

Newcastle University performs globally significant research across a wide range of disciplines and locations.

The University has a strong ethos of supporting multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research based on our excellence within individual disciplines. We achieve excellence in those disciplines by focussing our research on key areas of strength.

As part of the University’s commitment to excellence with impact, we have identified institutional challenge themes that address key societal issues. These themes address the demand-side of research by responding to the needs of both local society and global issues.

Ageing has been designated as the University’s first challenge theme and this is being led by the Institute for Ageing based in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The second challenge theme is Sustainability led by the Institute for Sustainability in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering.

The third and final theme of Social Renewal is about responding to the question: how can societies and communities thrive when faced with rapid, transformational change? The theme is led by the Institute for Social Renewal based in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
