Since RAE2001 Newcastle University Business School has made significant advances towards achieving its ambition of being one of the leading research-led business schools in the UK and Europe.

Although the school itself dates only from 2002, its success is evident in:

  • the number of staff submitted to the RAE, which has expanded by over 50% from 2001 to 41;
  • the volume of research income generated from external sources, which stands at nearly £4.3m since 2001;
  • the quality of publications produced, with members of the school publishing in leading international journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy and Economic Journal;
  • the development of world-leading research groups in the areas of innovation and technology management (KITE) and the economics of safety, health and risk (ESHER).

Research in the school is structured around four main themes:

  • Innovation Systems, Enterprise and Development
  • New Technologies and New Patterns of Work and Organisation
  • The Design, Demand and Delivery of Healthcare and the Public Services
  • Regulation, Control and Finance.

While recognising the achievements in the period since 2001, we are also keen to build upon the success we have enjoyed. On a practical level this will involve the move to a new single-site Business School building and engagement with the University’s Science City agenda. The Business School will play a core role in facilitating technology and knowledge transfer, and is being supported in this with an investment of £1m. In this way we hope to go further towards achieving our ambition of becoming one of the leading research-led business schools in the UK and Europe.
