Policies and Governance

Policy

As we enter an era in which the University is expected to engage in an ever-widening spectrum of teaching, research and other enterprise activities, it is critically important that we have in place both policies and practices which:

  • encourage and enable key activities,
  • promote revenue generation,
  • incentivise staff,
  • balance personal and institutional responsibilities,
  • protect our staff and the institution from risk wherever possible, and
  • discourage inappropriate activities.

The University has in place a range of policies to achieve these aims covering areas such as:

  • consultancy,
  • spin out companies,
  • intellectual property,
  • research governance and ethics,
  • copyright,
  • fraud,
  • freedom of speech, and
  • the use of animals in research.

Ethics and Governance

The University operates to guidelines established by the the National Research Ethics Service (NRES). Any research undertaken involving the study of human subjects requires ethical approval from the University and NRES. The University has established an Ethics Committee: a clear statement of our support for this important area. As part of this, we follow a Code of Good Practice in Research which all researchers in the University must familiarise themselves with in order to meet governance responsibilities and standards.
