Ageing

AgeingNewcastle University is one of the world leaders in this field, with a critical mass of research focused on its growing Campus for Ageing and Vitality. This has set the pace for universities worldwide.

Multi-disciplinary teams work across the University on cross-cutting research activities co-ordinated by the Newcastle Initiative on Changing Age located at the Campus.

Pioneering studies encompass systems biology investigating the basic causes of ageing and age related diseases, and conditions such as dementia, at the molecular, genetic and cellular level. Other research is looking at how movement, diet, exercise, new therapies and assistive technologies can promote healthy longevity while slowing the ageing process.

A large and growing cohort of older people has been recruited to support research activity as well as provide valuable advice and experience. Facilities for business development are harnessing the vast commercial opportunities stemming from discoveries being made.
