FIN8002 Studio Work - (Year 1, 110 credits) - The emphasis in this module is on the development of self-determined and self-directed studio-based practice along with creative, innovative and critical thinking under the supervision of your tutor, other staff and visiting lecturers. It aims to encourage the development of a body of creative work of an individual nature in visual practice and to provide grounding in critical methods and generate insight into their impact on practice of different kinds. It also aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of professional practice and your awareness of artists' contribution to contemporary culture.
FIN8000 Fine Art Research Training - (Year 1, 20 credits)- A programme of lectures, seminars and workshops provided by artists, writers, and curators relating to professional practice and exhibiting. Topics covered include the history of exhibitions, practical planning, funding and curating, proposal writing, and case studies of contemporary exhibitions, publications and interpretive material. The Interim Exhibition provides the opportunity to further explore the roles of exhibiting artist, curator and fundraiser as well as technical expertise in relation to exhibiting.
FIN8001 Fine Art Dissertation Subject Development - (Year 1, 30 credits) - An introduction to the variety of knowledge and skills required for the research, structuring and writing of the Stage 2 Dissertation. It aims to encourage the exploration of a variety of approaches to writing about visual art, and to develop skills in research, critical debate and written argument relative to a specific negotiated topic.
FIN8005 Beyond Discipline - (Year 1, 20 credits) - This module will require the student to reflect upon the methods, whether physical or conceptual, by which they normally explore and express their ideas. Students will investigate and engage with alternatives to their habitual methods and strategies. They will critically examine the concept of working within a ‘discipline’, encouraging the development of a more objective and informed view of their practice and create an opportunity for innovation.
FIN8003 Studio Work - (Year 2, 150 credits) - The emphasis in this module is on the development of a coherent body of viusal art developed through self-determined and self-directed studio-based practice, and which demonstrates creative, innovative and critical thinking and which culminates in your MFA degree show and a public exhibition of professional quality. This will be carried out under the supervision of your tutor, other staff and visiting lecturers.
FIN8099 Dissertation - (Year 2, 30 credits) - The Master of Fine Art dissertation will be both a sustained investigation into a subject of interest to you and on a subject relevant to your studio practice. The length is between 7500 and 9000 words, (not including bibliography, appendices etc) and is intended to support to your development as a practitioner.
