Curriculum Innovation: Award winning programme

In December 2011 our MA in International Multi-Media Journalism was awarded the Broadcast Journalism Training Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovation.
The degree is delivered in partnership with The Press Association, the multi-media national news agency of Britain and Ireland, which has subsidiaries and partnerships in 18 countries. PA has longstanding experience in delivering editorial training at all levels from entrant to executive level and trains journalists from major media news organisations in Britain and overseas.
The programme’s design was initially informed by the establishment of the Reuters Institute for Journalism at Oxford, a research institute which sought to bridge a gulf of understanding and engagement between academy and industry.  We sought to synthesise the study of media theory and professional practice and bridge the academy/industry divide in the field of journalism education. In delivering this Masters programme industry and HE work in partnership and learning is situating on campus and within media industry spaces.

The MA IMMJ is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, which is supported by the BBC, ITV, Sky News, Channel 4 News, Reuters, Associated Press, the National Union of Journalists and Skillset.

Each year a number of students on the programme are given privileged access to work placement opportunities within the BBC and graduates find posts in media industries around the world, including China Daily, Sky News, and the BBC, and in NGOs, such as Canada-based Reporters for Human Rights.
