BBC Connect and Create Partnership

We have engaged closely with BBC Connect and Create Partnership which was established to engage the corporation with universities in the North of England to mutual advantage during the development of Media City in Salford and the relocation of many BBC creative and production areas out of London.

The benefits:

  • Constant contact with BBC recruitment personnel;
  • Entering our students (u/g and p/g) within the 'pool of talent' from which the BBC aims to recruit;
  • Our students have regularly taken part in creative projects and innovation challenges which have showcased their talents to BBC executives;
  • Our students have benefited from master classes led by BBC experts on a wide range of skills; and
  • Regular engagement with BBC policy-makers which has significantly informed our curriculum development.

Example of curriculum development informed by BBC partnership:
Mark Harrison, head of digital for BBC Vision and former BBC head of Arts spoke of policy change in BBC towards

  • encouraging people to work in 'creative clusters', rather than in individually-defined roles;
  • around 'projects' rather than 'programmes'; and
  • the importance of developing creativity  and innovation as well as skills and knowledge.

This has informed the delivery of much of the curriculum which addresses professional practice on the MA in Media and Journalism, MA in Media and PR and MA International Multi-Media Journalism

In the modules Multimedia Journalism Principles and Practice; PR in the Digital World; The Art and Practice of Digital Film (I and II) students now work in creative clusters on projects in an entrepreneurial manner and are assessed in part on creativity and innovation and elements which go beyond what they have been taught.
