If you study music at the International Centre for Music Studies, you will be part of a large and friendly community of musicians. Music is a social activity and you will find yourself making friends very quickly. As a student at ICMuS you will partake not just in a challenging and rewarding programme of study but you will also set about creating a network of fellow professionals and practitioners that could be with you for the rest of your career.
Although most of our students complete their studies without any personal problems getting in the way, every so often you might find yourself in need of a friendly ear, or someone to help you with a difficult personal problem. We are therefore exceptionally proud of our personal tutoring system at ICMuS and, although ICMuS is one of the largest university providers of music in the UK, it is also one of the friendliest. When you arrive in Newcastle, you will be assigned to a personal tutor from the ICMuS academic team. Your tutor is your personal link with the University and will be someone involved in the teaching of your degree programme. Your tutor can advise and support you in academic and non-academic matters. You can go to them at any time for advice and help, whether about choice of modules, finance or any other University matter. They may help you directly or refer you to another relevant support service. You will meet at the beginning and end of each semester, and regularly at other times. In addition, ICMuS has a super pastoral tutor who is a specialist in student care and counselling and who is available for consultation at any time in your programme of study.
As a student of music at Newcastle University, not only will you have access to all our facilities at ICMuS but you will also be encouraged to access the wide range of world-class University facilities and other sources of support, including the Robinson Library; extensive computer clusters (both within ICMuS and across campus), the Students' Union; University Careers Service and English language teaching services. For pre-entry English-language courses, click here.
The university's Student Wellbeing Service provides information, advice and support on a wide range of student support issues to help you maximise your potential whilst at University. For example, the university offers support for students with disabilities, and information and advice relating to childcare, funding and international scholarships, support for life matters - advice and information on health matters including emotional and psychological health needs, counselling, life skills development, access to mental health support and information on faith and religious provision. There is also a wide range of help available to mature students.
The service is free, confidential and available to all. The service is split in to three teams: Financial Support; Disability Support; Life Matters. See the links a the bottom of the page for more details.
Health scheme for
ICMuS studentsThe ICMuS is part of a student health scheme, as lead partner of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) for Music and Inclusivity, that has been launched by the Musicians Benevolent Fund. This innovative scheme offers financial assistance with the treatment of performance-related health problems, both physical and psychological. A student suffering from any health issue affecting their ability to perform can apply to the MBF for a treatment grant, which can be used to pay for sessions with an appropriate therapist or practitioner. Typically, following assessment at a specialist clinic, a student will be awarded an initial treatment grant of £250 to pay for the treatment that has been recommended. A further £250 can be made available if the practitioner recommends further treatment. £500 is the maximum that any student can receive. The eligibility guidelines for this scheme are as follows:
Accommodation When you choose a University, you are also choosing your home for the next few years. The university has a range of accommodation available for all students - find out more on the university's undergraduate accommodation pages and our postgraduate accommodation pages at the following links:
Many of our undergraduate and postgraduate students are from overseas and the University as a whole has thousands of students from over 100 countries. We welcome international students and have a range of information designed to help you.
English language requirements
You will be required to provide evidence of your English language ability before beginning your programme. We recognize the difficulties International students face working in what is in most cases a foreign language. We therefore try to give as much additional help as possible. If necessary, the University can offer language training (a fee is charged for pre-sessional courses) and support during your programme of study in specific areas such as dissertation/thesis writing.
Choosing where to study (or even what subject to study) is a complex and sometimes bewildering process. If there is one thing we have noticed in our experience of providing oustanding education to generations of music students it is that students flourish in those institutions that are well suited to their needs, their learning styles and their skills. This means that you should be absolutely sure that ICMuS is the right place for you before you add us to your UCAS form, or apply for a postgraduate course. Our advice, when choosing where to study, is to take your time. To get your decision absolutely right, we recommend you do the following:
