About Robert

Undergraduate degree

I liked the diversity of the subject matter on the course and the social life of the University. There were countless opportunities to perform.

After graduating

I am a freelance Opera Singer. I have sung frequently as a principle artist with the Royal Opera Covent Garden and English National Opera. I have also sung main roles with Opera North, Glyndebourne on Tour, Garsington Opera, Buxton Festival, Salzburg Festival, Opera de Nantes, and divide the rest of my time between recital programmes/concert work and looking after Lara, my one year old daughter.

Highlights this year: Tenor solos in Elijah at the Proms with Paul Mccreesh and subsequently recording it; My first Elgar's Dream of Gerontius at the Sage with Eric Cross; First Schubert's Winterreise with Andrew West in Nuremberg; Teaching masterclasses at Dartington International Summer School.

How your degree prepared you for your career

My first opportunities to perform as a Tenor came through the music department at the University. The first main oratorio I performed was Arne's King Alfred in the Newcastle Early Music festival conducted by Eric Cross. My degree also proved very useful in developing the skills needed to research the music I now perform.
