John Piper in the 1930s : Abstraction on the Beach (2003)

Author(s): Spalding F; Jenkins DF

Abstract: This book was co-authored with David Fraser Jenkins, originally as a catalogue for the exhibition of the same title held at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the spring of 2003 and afterwards at the Djanogly Gallery, University of Nottingham. As authors and curators of the exhibition, it was possible to mount a tautly presented argument concerning John Piper’s engagement and disengagement with abstraction during the 1930s, and to study his interest in what he called ‘nautical style’, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic sculpture as well as his desire to revive the Picturesque in modern terms. Both book and exhibition were widely reviewed in the national and art press, including The Times (‘it is an exhibition with attitude, and everything here is of the highest quality’. The book/catalogue was awarded second prize in the Art Catalogue of the Year award, promoted by the Art Newspaper
