Research Assessment Exercise 2008

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise over 80% of the School of Arts and Cultures’ research was rated ‘Internationally Excellent’ with some 30% rated ‘World Leading’.

Across our subject areas – Art and Design UoA63 and Music UoA67, this was one of the very best results achieved by any British University.

Our staff includes internationally renowned scholars, composers, visual artists and musicians as well as outstanding younger researchers. Much of our work is interdisciplinary or tests the traditional boundaries of our disciplines. Our projects influence the latest thinking in our subject areas globally, whilst in the UK we lead important Government funded research projects which will have a key impact on the nation’s cultural life. Most important for our students, we are determined that al of our research should vitally inform our teaching programmes and the learning experience.

We are currently the home to over 70 postgraduate research students, studying across all of our subject areas, many of whom hold AHRC awards. Our award from the AHRC ‘Block Grant Partnership Postgraduate Awards Scheme’ which funds both research and taught postgraduate scholarships means that over the next five years we will be able to support a further 76 new post graduate students on our taught and research programmes. Details about these scholarships will be advertised on this website.

On these research pages you will find information about our most exciting work as well as links to particular projects and to individual members of staff.
