Background

I have an MA (Hons) in German and History of Art from Edinburgh University, an MA in Museum Studies and a PhD in Museum Studies both from Newcastle University. My postgraduate studies were funded by the AHRC and the German Academic Exchange Council (DAAD). In addition to my academic work, I also have professional experience of working at: the Alte and Neue Pinakothek - two major art museums in Munich, Germany; RCAHMS - a national architectural and archaeological archive in Scotland; the Palace of Holyroodhouse - a royal palace in Edinburgh; AKG Images - a commercial arts and history picture library in London.

Research Interests

My research interests are interdisciplinary – they include German art and architecture, cultural policy, museum architecture, museology, economic and social regeneration - yet all encompass the wider issue of the relationship between art/architecture/culture and the state. I recently assisted Aron Mazel on a research project examining the influence of the Afrikaner Broederbond on museums, culture and public life during Apartheid-era South Africa and am currently working as Research Associate on the European funded MeLA project:
