Providing the skills and understanding of key processes appropriate for environmental engineers

This course will provide you with:

  • experience of practical analytical methods
    • allowing you to assess pollution of the natural environment and engineered treatment systems
  • a good knowledge and understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological science and processes
    • allowing you to assess pollution of the natural environment and engineered treatment systems
  • these underpin Environmental Engineering and sustainability of the environment

Course Objectives

By the time you've finished this course, you'll have developed an awareness of:

  • global, regional and local environmental issues
  • international protocols
  • the principles of sustainability

You'll understand:

  • the key components of aqueous, terrestrial and gaseous environments
  • their interaction with pollutants

You'll have knowledge of:

  • important analytical tools which monitor and assess environmental pollution and protect public health
  • the historic evolution of public health engineering principles and environmental regulations

You'll be proficient in:

  • laboratory analytical techniques for standard analysis of water and wastewater samples
  • calculating and expressing experimental data in standard units
  • assessing experimental uncertainty
  • testing the statistical significance of treatment effects

Finally, you'll be able to:

  • source relevant reference data and water quality standards
  • make comparisons with analytical data
  • draw relevant conclusions
  • prepare technical laboratory reports

Course Outline

  • History of public health engineering and environmental standards
  • Faecal-oral route of disease transmission (case study)
  • Chemistry Fundamentals, including chemical pollutants (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite)
  • Microbiology Fundamentals, including pathogens (E. Coli, Vibrio Cholera, Salmonella Typhi) and biotransformation (nitrification of urea)
  • Measurement and Analysis Fundamentals, including quality assurance and statistics (Theory and Practical)
  • Modelling Fundamentals, including mass balance and simple computational methods

Academic Module Outline

This course is also delivered as a Module (code CEG8101) on at least one of the Faculty's Masters programmes, the majority of which can be studied part time, making them suitable for those in employment. You will attend with full and part time registered students. The Academic Module Outline is available via the University's Module Catalogue.

Optional laboratory sessions

The lecture/tutorial elements of the course take place in the mornings with optional laboratory sessions in the afternoons. There will be four laboratory afternoon sessions, and one computer practical. The laboratory sessions provide basic laboratory analytical skills for the common water and wastewater parameters (chemical, physical and microbiological) used in water and wastewater quality assessment for UK Standards.

      • We hope to offer CPD delegates the option of attending laboratory sessions, but can only confirm this when capacity is known. This optional element of the course attracts an additional fee of £175.

We offer a 30 percent discount to full time students and to Newcastle University staff.

The course fee includes tuition, course materials, lunch and refreshments.

Formal assessment may be available for this Course. Assessment attracts an additional fee of £365, and delegates will be issued with a transcript and Certificate of Credit Achieved. Owing to visa restrictions the assessment option is not available to international students outside the European Economic Area (EEA).
