I work in the Grants and Contracts team, which is part of the University Research Office. The team's role as a whole is to provide efficient, timely support to academics applying for research grants in the SAgE and HASS faculties.
After leaving school I worked for Northumbria Police for a number of years based in their Criminal Jusitice Unit. Before joining the University I worked for Zurich Financial Services in their car and home insurance department.
I joined the University in 2003 as a clerical assistant and then worked on the RAE 2008 project before taking up the position of Senior Grants Administrator for the HASS faculty. I enjoyed the contractual aspects of the post so decided to make it a career. I have been Assistant Grants and Contracts Manager since 2008.
As one of a team of Assistant Grants & Contracts Managers, I provide advice and support on a range of activities to staff in the research environment from the initial application through to project set up.
This includes;
· Advising on costings, eligibility, funder guidelines and University policies.
· Providing official University approval of applications for submission.
· Checking terms and conditions of award.
· Drafting/negotiation of contracts – including collaboration agreements, subcontracts, studentships and confidentiality agreements.
· Liaison with the relevant services in the University to ensure effective management of the award.
As part of my role I am an authorised signatory on research applications.
