Since 2007 the University has been developing a link with the island province of Hainan, a Special Economic Zone in the subtropics of south China. A Memorandum of understanding was signed between Newcastle University and the provincial government in January 2008. The plan is comprehensive in providing opportunity for any type of activity, from undergraduate teaching through to consultancy work, and in any academic sector represented at Newcastle.
In Hainan, five state and provincial government institutions and three universities have now been identified as key partners. Promising areas for collaboration include renewable energy, biofuels, water engineering, green agriculture, biotechnology, coastal zone management, maritime law and policy, medical research, language and literature, minority cultures, and performing arts.
The focus on Newcastle in the UK, combined with the breadth of linkages in Hainan, make this a novel way to catalyse globalisation of the university's activities abroad, as well as the internationalisation of the Newcastle campus.
In order to support the development of the link, Newcastle University is hosting a collaboration website containing further information for the link partners.
