Research Council Studentships

Research council studentships are grants which generally provide some or all of the costs of tuition fees, living expenses and a contribution towards other expenses like fieldwork or travel.

  • UK citizens are eligible for full or partial support, covering fees and maintenance
  • Non-UK, EU nationals who have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to the start-date of the programme (including those residing wholly or mainly for the purposes of full-time education) are eligible for full or partial support, covering fees and maintenance.
  • If you are an EU national (but have not been a resident of the UK for the last three years) you may be eligible for fees only support.

However, it's not possible to offer all students on a course a funded place. You will be asked when you apply if you would like to be considered for funding. Money is then allocated on a competitive basis, at the discretion of programme leaders.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (ESPRC)

For students in SAgE, the most important source of funding is through the EPSRC Doctoral Training Accounts.

Please note that while the EPSRC sets the minimum level of stipend for research students, there is no equivalent for students following taught courses. Details will be available from the programme director of the course you are interested in. Those students previously in receipt of an MSc CTA Award would not normally be eligible for further support from the Account.

Additional Funding Councils

Funding may be available via the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council (BBSRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) or Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), depending upon the subject area. Find out more:
