The Great North Museum Collections

A new opportunity for world-class research

Great North Museum logoThe Great North Museum encompasses the Great North Museum: Hancock, the Hatton Gallery and the new Resource Centre at Discovery Museum. The museum’s collections are among the largest and most diverse collections in any non-national institution in Europe. Many of the collections, which include those of the Natural History Society of Northumbria and the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon tyne, are of international scientific and historical interest. These collections and the new galleries of the Great North Museum: Hancock span local and worldwide natural history, palaeontology, archaeology and ethnography, while the Hatton Gallery houses a significant permanent collection of over 3,500 artworks.

These wonderful collections are an excellent resource for the university, with the potential for a wide range of uses in research and teaching.
