The Great North Museum's new library houses the major specialist naturalists' library in the North of England. The Natural History Society of Northumbria, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne began to form its own library on its foundation in 1829, and the collection of books, periodicals and manuscripts has continued to grow by donation, purchase and exchange up to the present. These books and periodicals, along with the archaeology books and reports, offprints and journals of Newcastle University's Cowen library and the library of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne form a rich research library to competent the collections and galleries of the museum.
