Professor Phillip Wright

PVC of SAgE

Background

As PVC (SAgE), I am responsible for a Faculty with a turnover of £130 million and serve as line manager of four Heads of School, Faculty Deans and Directors of the Newcastle University Institute for Sustainability, the Digital Institute and Newcastle University International Singapore. 

I am a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and a member of several learned societies, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE) and the American Chemical Society.

Research

I am currently using synthetic biology (EPSRC and BBVSRC funded) and metabolic engineering approaches to improve energy generation (2nd and 3rd generation biofuels: EU FPVII, BBSRC and industry-funded) and production of biopharmaceuticals (BBSRC BRIC (twice) and BBSRC-InnovateUK funded).

I am is also interested in research at the interface of medicine and engineering (EPSRC funded). I focus on measurement and integration of multi-level biological data (e.g. proteomic and mRNA data), mathematical tools and characterising -omics-scale data.
