Staff Profile

Dr Samuel Neill

InTEGReL Programme Manager

Background

Summary

I am currently working to help realise the collective vision of Newcastle University, Northern Powergrid and Northern Gas Networks for a whole-systems energy research and demonstration facility called InTEGRel.

The 'Integrated Transport Electricity and Gas Research Laboratory' (InTEGRel) is located in Gateshead and is an incubator for cutting-edge whole energy systems technology, allowing forward-thinking businesses to test their ideas in real-world conditions, and at a large scale.

InTEGReL will tackle the UK’s energy challenges head on, with teams of academics and engineers from the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration (CESI) and other organisations to deliver breakthroughs in the decarbonisation of heat, energy storage and transport.

The facility comprises of a flexible energy system that will allow different future strategies and technologies to be compared and tested at scale. This networked and highly flexible site will be able to supply, generate, distribute, covert, store and manage a number of energy vectors (e.g. electricity, natural gas, hydrogen, heating and cooling) satisfying the demands from a variety of domestic properties and future low-emission transport solutions.

InTEGReL is an investment in the consumer, as the principal aim will be working to identify the most affordable and practical solution for the UK to adopt and help move all customers onto low carbon, low-cost energy.
