Medicine MB BS Honours – Graduated 2016

What have you been up to since graduating?

After completing my Medicine Degree at Newcastle, which included an intercalated year of study during which I completed a Masters of Research in Cancer, I went into employment as a Foundation Doctor at St Mary's Hospital in London.

What were the benefits of the PARTNERS Programme for you?

I was naturally really nervous about attaining the required grades to get into medical school and so PARTNERS offered a very attractive option for me with the reduced offer. I found the summer school itself very helpful in orienting me into the city and the campus itself. It also meant that I got to meet other students that would be starting University in September which made me more confident knowing there were already some friendly faces! The PARTNERS staff and Reps were all so friendly and kind and really cared, easing the whole transition from sixth form.

Do you think you had any advantages over non-PARTNERS students during your time at University?

Yes definitely; at the very start I already knew the layout of the city and the campus and didn't struggle to find anything or even use the Library. I had been able to stay in halls during the Summer School and that definitely improved my confidence in living away from home. Probably most importantly however, was the chance it gave me to develop lasting relationships with the staff and Reps I met on the Summer School and I subsequently went on to become a Student Rep throughout my degrees which was a great way to earn money and pass on my passion for PARTNERS and the University in general.

What support did you receive from the PARTNERS team during the Assessed Summer School and throughout your time at University?

The PARTNERS staff were fantastic in terms of both academic and pastoral care. It could have been quite a daunting time as a lot was riding on that summer school but I always knew who I could turn for help and advice.

If you could give advice or tips to a new PARTNERS student, what would it be?

Embrace the opportunity being given to you - PARTNERS offers a great opportunity to make friends and gain some confidence around campus and in studying your chosen degree course. Use this to your advantage and show your fellow flat or course mates round on your first day.

Any final words?

I am so grateful for the opportunity PARTNERS gave me - without it I may not have gone to Newcastle and I cannot rate my degree and time at Newcastle highly enough. The team are brilliant!
