Dr Thillainathan Logenthiran

Assistant Professor of Electrical Power Engineering

Background

Biography:

Dr Thillainathan Logenthiran obtained his B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. Previously, he worked at the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom as a postdoctoral researcher. Currently, he works as an Assistant Professor at the school of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Newcastle University, Singapore.

Prior to his doctorate studies, he worked as an electrical engineer at JM Pang & Seah (Pte) Ltd, Singapore, as a lecturer at the University of Ruhuna, and as a instructor at the University of Peradeniya. He also worked as a part-time tutor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) while perusing his doctorate degree.

His main research focus is on applications of computational intelligent techniques for development of smart grid and future power systems. His research areas of interest include smart grid, smart home/building, micro grid, renewable energy resources, optimization, applications of optimization techniques, computational intelligent techniques and intelligent Multi-Agent System (MAS) for electrical power engineering. He published several internationally referred journal papers, book chapters and conference papers on power system engineering and applications of computational intelligent techniques.

He is very passionate about teaching of electrical power engineering and applications of computational intelligent techniques for real-world problems.

Dr Thillainathan Logenthiran was the first prize award winner of Siemens Smart Grid Innovation Contest, 2011, awarded in Berlin, Germany.

He is a senior member of IEEE, member of IET, member of IES and associate member of IESL. He is also a member of the IEEE Power and Energy society (PES) and the IEEE Computational Intelligence society (CIS). He is currently a treasurer of IEEE PES Singapore chapter.

EEE2201 Electrical Systems - The aims of this module are to introduce students to topics in electrical engineering including polyphase circuits, polyphase synchronous machines, three-phase distribution systems, polyphase induction machines and electric drives.

EEE2202 Digital Electronics - The aims of this module are to enable students to understand the essential principles of digital logic systems as used for control, communications and information processing; to enable the student to design such systems; to study the operation and performance of computer arithmetic circuits, synchronous and asynchronous sequential logic circuits.

EEE3203 Generation, Transmission and Distribution - The aims for this module are to provide students with a systematic understanding of the operation of a modern electricity network, operating under balanced steady-state and fault conditions. The course is designed to be of value to students who are considering a career in the electricity supply industry or any large industrial user with their own networks.

EEE3204 Renewable Energy Systems - The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamentals of available sources of renewable energy and give details of its conversion into electricity. Students will gain an overview of the engineering challenges of renewable energy production and a wider understanding of renewable energy in a societal context. The leading technologies in the field will be examined in detail, with a focus on electrical machine requirements.

EEE3207 Individual Project - The aim of this module is to enhance the ability of the student to apply his/her engineering expertise to investigate a complex problem.
