Programme StructureThe programme is available for study in part-time mode via flexible learning.
The period of study for part-time mode is usually 3 years. Each taught module will consist of 100 study hours, of which 35 hours will be the intensive school. Reading and course work will be prescribed for the non-intensive school part of the module. Candidates will normally be required to undertake a minimum of five taught modules per year.
The programme comprises modules to a credit value of 180. This consists of 10 compulsory modules (10 credits each) and a final dissertation (80 credits).
Students are given 3 years in which to complete:
All modules, excepting the dissertation, can also be offered as stand-alone CPD modules. The dissertation is often undertaken in conjunction with a student’s workplace.
Pre-school material - this will enable students to revise and review pre-requisite material so that the intensive school can be run efficiently and effectively. The pre-school materials are made available 4 weeks prior to the intensive school.
One week intensive school - this runs from Saturday - Saturday and includes a range of lectures, case studies, tutorials, presentations, discussions and visits. Students will sit an examination (40% of the module mark) during this intensive teaching week.
Each week is generally structured:
Post school material - this will involve completion of a post school assignment (60% of the module mark) which is submitted 4 weeks after the intensive school. This will consolidate the module learning.
To pass a module, students must achieve an overall module mark of 50% or above. Even if a student fails one element of the module they can still pass if the average is above 50% - this is in line with standard Newcastle University MSc regulations.
All candidates will take the following compulsory modules:
Normally an upper-second class Honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering or another relevant subject.
Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
Students must use a specific International MSc application form (Word doc: 44KB) to apply. Completed application forms should be returned to mast.pg@ncl.ac.uk along with certificates of their qualifications and any transcripts, where possible.
Applications should be made approx. two months before the requested intake.
Cohorts will commence the programme each January or September.
The proposed fee strategy for students is below:
Total cost of the MSc = £13,500 plus GST
CPD modules are £1,350 each.
