About the SchoolOld Library Building

We are a multi-disciplinary School. Fundamental to our teaching and research is the recognition that learning a foreign language provides a unique key to the understanding of other cultures and societies.

There are further opportunities to study Languages with a wide range of subjects through the Combined Honours programme. The teaching and autonomous learning of languages in the School is supported strongly by the excellent facilities of the Language Resource Centre, located also in the Old Library Building.

The School of Modern Languages at Newcastle is very active in outreach work. It is the Lead Institution in the North East Routes into Languages Consortium and hosts, together with the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, the North East Links into Languages Regional Centre.

We are the provider for German Extension Courses in the North East region with the support of the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences and funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

Newcastle University is a member of the Santander Universities network. The School of Modern Languages offers funding opportunities for those pursuing study or research in the countries of the Iberian Peninsula and many countries of Latin America.
