The agreement between the University and Santander Universities will be in place for a minimum of three years. It was sealed during a signing ceremony that coincided with the opening of the newest UK branch of Banco Santander in the Students’ Union building.
The agreement will provide support for a range of University activities. These include seven postgraduate studentships for students registered on the taught one-year MA in Latin American Interdisciplinary Studies; support for the Santander Lectureship in Spanish for Business; a minimum of 12 International Exchange Bursaries per year; and the Santander Visiting Fellowship Scheme.
Support for a minimum of two high profile Santander Visiting Research Fellows, three £2,000 Business Incubation Awards, a contribution to the Santander Newcastle Racing Award and 16 Santander Community Engagement Awards, also forms part of the agreement.
Luis Juste, Director UK & Portugal, Santander Universities said: “It is a great pleasure for me to welcome Newcastle University to the Santander Universities network. The agreement opens a whole range of opportunities for staff and students to study, conduct research and live in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. It will also allow students from those countries to benefit from the vibrant life of Newcastle as well as the quality of its university.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Brink, added: “We share Santander Universities’ belief that investment in higher education is vital to securing the future of the UK economy. This agreement comes as welcome recognition of, and support for, our work relating to Latin America.”
