The subject ‘translation’ can be studied as an end product of a cross-linguistic and cross-culture activity, or as a process, through which a source text is reproduced in a target language. But when psychologists become interested in this subject, what does translation mean to them? When it is a scientific inquiry into its processes, is ‘translation’ alone sufficient in formulating research question and design? In this talk, I will use a few examples to show that stringent operational definition of translation (or interpreting) is required to make translation (and interpreting) a subject of translational research that informs the training and practice of translation and interpreting.
