Dr Michelle Min-Hsiu Liao (Lecturer in Chinese, Heriot Watt University) will give a talk in the T&I Lecture Series on 'Translation and the Creation of a New Genre'
This study investigates the role of translation in the creation of a new genre in the target polysystem. The assumption taken by this study is from the polysystem theory as described by Even-Zohar (1990): when a genre is young and new in the target system, the translation tends to play a dominant and influential role. The data under discussion here is popular science writings as an emerging genre in Taiwan in the recent decades. As a young genre and with most of its publications translated from English, we would like to investigate the potential influence of translation practice on non-translated writings in Taiwan. The English and Chinese versions of Scientific American are used as the corpora. The presentation intends to demonstrate specifically how the writer-reader interaction in the non-translations has been influenced by the translations.
