Often associated with auteur cinema, French film is also home to popular genres such as the horror film. Since 2000, French horror cinema has been enjoying a resurgence, culminating in the controversial popular success of the extreme body horror, A l'interieur (2007). This paper will attempt to get inside the contemporary French horror film, relating it to theories of horror (eg Kristeva) and to discourses on gender, motherhood and biotechnology.
