In recent years, new research has shown that the topic of flight and expulsion - affecting between 12 and 14 million Germans at the end of the war - was never 'taboo' in post-war German culture and certainly not in politics. My current project, to which this paper serves as a partial introduction, builds on this research, seeking to establish how the topic was (re)presented across a wide range of media and discourses. The paper will provide some preliminary thoughts on representations in literature, memorials and historiography.
