Literary Studies

Introduction

In the School of Modern Languages, the members of staff who are research-active in literary studies include two professors (Lähnemann, Stimpson), one reader (Müller), two senior lecturers (Andersen, Jones), and three lecturers (El-Maizi, Ludden, Robson). Colleagues working on literature are based in three different Subject areas: French Studies; German Studies, as well as Translation and Interpreting Studies.

Our research interests and expertise comprise medieval studies, literary translation, as well as modern literature and contemporary writing.  We work in a wide range of languages, including Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian. Staff are happy to supervise postgraduate research students in their areas of expertise.

Research aims and questions

Certain common questions currently under examination include such notions as the Subject, Identity, Narratology, Cultural Representation, Trauma and Memory, Translation and the Writing process. Although the principal focus is upon European writing there are interests too in the literatures of Latin America and China.
