Abstract: This article examines the representation of the lunatic in the works of Marguerite Duras. The analysis is based upon the ‘existential’ phenomenological philosophy of Merleau-Ponty and his reading of the body and of the living of the body on the level of experience. Following three main lines, namely the relation of the lunatic to Time and Space, his relation to the Other and his relation to Language, it demonstrates how Duras, in her description of madness, draws on the phenomenological model of perception to, ultimately, go beyond it.
