Revealing Alternatives: Online Comparative Translations of Interlinked Chinese Historical Texts (2007)

Author(s): Standen N; Jones F

Notes: Events and texts have many legitimate interpretations, but we generally only see one at a time. This paper describes a rigorous interdisciplinary methodology for creating a full-text database of systematic comparative-critical translations of multiple narratives in the histories for the Five Dynasties and Liao. By developing a practical solution to the problem of how to locate and present the multivocality of texts, such a project would permit historians and translation-studies scholars to explore methods of opening up their narratives to other possibilities rather than closing down interpretation to a single dominant thread.
