Abstract: The chapter analyses a published version of a Quechua drama depicting the Spanish conquest of the Incas, widely performed in Bolivia and Peru, as evidence of the colonisation of historical knowledge in the Andes. The text is shown to be a transculturated depiction of historical events, whereby the indigenous version is subsumed within a mestizo view. Issues around authorship and 'authenticity' of the play are brought to bear, as is an analysis of the Quechua vocabulary for talking about 'knowing' and 'learning' contained in the text.
Keywords: Andean ethnography; Quechua; indigenous knowledge; ideological colonisation
