Abstract: 'Along the boundaries of language. Language ideologies in the Andes. A Critical Discourse Analysis approach.' The book examines the role of language ideologies in the discursive construction of cultural identities in contemporary Andean societies. It draws on both critical sociolinguistic theory (especially current research in the field of language ideologies) and theory of identity as elaborated in social anthropology (especially the concept of boundary), and seeks to work these theoretical strands into a single explanatory framework. To this end the study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough; van Dijk) to the analysis of a broad range of verbal testimonies collected during fieldwork. Interviews were conducted in Quechua and Spanish and textual analysis identifies discourse features arising in both languages. The book chapters are arranged thematically in order to develop a comparative framework for the study of this topic across three Andean countries: Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
