Background

Dr Dauncey graduated in European Studies and Economics, before doing an MA in French Linguistics. He undertook a PhD on the politics of the French space programme. Before coming to Newcastle he worked in Bordeaux at the ESCAE, at the University of Bath, at the Université Paris 7 (Jussieu), and occasionally at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration and the Assemblée Nationale in Paris.

Roles and responsibilities

I am currently or have served as Degree Programme Director for a range of SML degrees, especially Single Honours French, French/German/Spanish & Politics, French/German/Spanish & Business, Modern Languages with Management and other programmes. I have served as 'Head of French' on a number of occasions as well as being SML Year Abroad Officer. I am currently French section Erasmus coordinator, member of the SML UG Board of Studies, of the SML UG Academic Framework working party, and Chair of the SML UG Board of Examiners.

I am currently (2011-14) a member of University Senate, having previously served on Senate in 2000-03.

Dr Dauncey is a co-editor of the Web Journal of French Media Studies (WJFMS, founded 1998) and co-organiser of the French Media Research Group (FMRG, founded 1995).

In the past five years I have been invited to review book manuscripts by Indiana University press, Liverpool University press, Peter Lang, and others, and have reviewed article submissions for a variety of research journals such as Modern & Contemporary France, International Review for the Sociology of Sport, Canadian Journal of History, Journal of Urban History, International Journal of Cultural Studies, Media History, Nottingham French Studies, Volume ! La revue des musiques populaires, Sport in History and many others. I have also served (2010) as an expert reviewer for the French Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR). I am a member of the Comité de lecture international of the French popular music journal Volume !

I have recently contributed, or am currently serving as expert reviewer for a number of international conferences, such as 'Travail et création artistique en régime numérique' organised by the Université d'Avignon, the Laboratoire Georges Friedmann and the GRANEM (May 2011).

The media are regularly interested in my expertise, as well as responding to requests from journalists to confirm/advise on their reporting on French sport and music, I have participated on radio shows with Radio Newcastle (France '98 World Cup and the Tour de France), have advised on TV documentaries for BBC4 and Channel 4 (on French football) and have most recently (February 2013) been interviewed by Sky Sports for a Sky Sports Soccer Saturday feature on the influx of French players to Newcastle United.
