The School of Modern Languages seeks outstanding applicants for School scholarships on our Taught and Research Masters programmes.
Successful applicants will join our thriving School, which was ranked sixth in the UK for Modern Languages and Linguistics in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. There is a vibrant research culture in the School; staff and students work in a diverse range of fields from sociocultural, historical and political studies, to film and literature, to linguistics, sociolinguistics and translating/interpreting studies.
The School hosts regular research seminars and has strong links to a number of Research Groups and Centres in the HASS Faculty, including: Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), Postcolonial Research Network; Research Centre for Film and Digital Media; Translating and Interpreting Research Forum.
Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who, at the time the application is submitted, have accepted an offer of a place for 2018-19 entry on one of the following Masters programmes in the School:
- MLitt (Masters by Research) in Chinese Studies; Film Studies; French Studies; German Studies; Iberian and Latin American Studies; Japanese Studies; Linguistics; Translation and Interpreting
- MA in Translating and Interpreting (Chinese)
- MA in Professional Translation for European Languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish)
- MA Film: Theory and Practice

Launched by the Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation in 2014, the Sasakawa studentships at Newcastle University form part of a five year programme designed to support the study of Japan in the UK at postgraduate level. The value of each studentship (MA or PhD) is £10,000.
