Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course in German

Study Visit in BerlinWhat is it?

It is a full time, pre-ITT (Initial Teacher Training) German language Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course, for those who need to develop competence in German as a condition of entry to an ITT course. Participants develop the confidence and expertise to teach German to pupils in Key Stage 3 (years 7-9 of secondary schooling), as a minimum requirement. Some might be able to teach to GCSE level and possibly beyond, and the course is also suitable for trainees who need a refresher course in German as their main teaching language.
The course is funded by the Department for Education, so there are no tuition fees, and candidates with an honours degree at level 2:2 or above (or equivalent) are eligible for a bursary of up to £2,400.
Participants with prior knowledge of German to "A"-level standard or equivalent can usually join direct on to the main course. Complete beginners, or those with little previous experience in German, attend an intensive two week "ab initio" programme prior to the main course.

What are the course dates for 2014?

The course dates will be:

  • Ab initio course:  2nd to 13th June
  • Main course:  16th June to 22nd August
