Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course in German

Study Visit in Berlin

The SKE in German is a full time, face to face course, funded by the Department for Education for those who need to develop competence in German as a condition of entry to an ITT (Initial Teacher Training) course. Participants develop the confidence and expertise to teach German to pupils in Key Stage 3 (years 7-9 of secondary schooling), as a minimum requirement. Some might be able to teach to GCSE level and possibly beyond. Complete beginners are welcome, and the course is also suitable for trainees who need a refresher course in German as their main teaching language.

The course is now in its 10th year and is popular with both trainees and training providers for the following reasons:

  • Face to face provision, led by experienced language teachers, offers opportunities for observing best practice in current language teaching
  • Daily interaction with other language learners
  • Modern language learning facilities with opportunities for self-study in the fully refurbished multimedia Language Resource Centre
  • Being in the position of a language learner will help you better understand how to become an effective language teacher
  • Having a second language improves your prospects for both teacher training and employability
  • Assessment by course portfolio – no formal written examinations

Course dates for 2016

The course dates will be:

  • Ab initio course: 6th to 17th June
  • Main course: 20th June to 26th August
